The Ganges, also known as the Ganga River, is the largest and longest river in India. It is also an important religious site for Hindus. Spanning 2510 km from the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, the Ganga provides a lifeline for approximately 500 million people along its banks. This is probably the largest number of people supported by a river anywhere in the world. However, this huge population has made the Ganges the most polluted rivers in the world. The danger applies not only to humans, but also to animals, including more than 140 species of fish, 90 species of amphibians and mammals such as the Ganges dolphin.
